Step-by-Step: Applying for the NZ Working Holiday Visa Online

Every Working Holiday Visa is applied for online, directly through Immigration New Zealand — there’s no paper form, no agent required, and no in-person appointment. Here’s exactly what the process looks like, start to finish.

1. Confirm your scheme is open

2. Gather your documents

Before you begin the application, have ready:

• A valid physical passport. You must hold one at the time you apply — an expired or in-renewal passport means your application can be declined.
• A digital photo of yourself that meets Immigration New Zealand’s visa photo specifications (recent, plain background, specific size and format).
• Evidence of funds — a bank statement or similar showing you meet your scheme’s amount (see the Visa Checker for your figure).
• Any scheme-specific documents your country’s agreement requires — some ask for a police certificate, medical certificate, or qualification evidence. Check your country’s requirements before applying, since these must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation.

3. Create an Immigration Online account

Sign up at Immigration New Zealand’s online application portal using your email address. This account is where you’ll fill in the application form, upload documents, and track its progress afterward.

4. Fill in the form, upload, and pay

Complete the application questions, upload your photo and supporting documents, then pay the visa fee by Mastercard, Visa, or UnionPay. There’s no option to pay by bank transfer or in person — the card payment is part of the same online step.

5. Wait for a decision

Immigration New Zealand will contact you directly (usually by email, through your account) if they need more information or a medical/police certificate you didn’t already supply.
