USA Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand: Full Guide for US Citizens

If you hold a US passport, you can apply for New Zealand’s Working Holiday Visa between ages 18 and 30. There’s no annual cap on this scheme, so you can apply any time you meet the requirements — there’s no opening date to race for. Who can apply

• Age: 18 to 30 at the time of application.
• Citizenship and residency: you need US citizenship, and you must normally live in the USA.
• One-time only: you can’t apply if you’ve been granted this visa before — even if you never used it.

How long you can stay

The visa runs for up to 12 months. If you complete at least 3 months of work in agriculture or horticulture while you’re in New Zealand, you can apply for a Working Holiday Extension Work Visa for an additional 3 months.

What you need: funds, insurance, medical

• Funds: at least NZD $4,200 to cover your living expenses — this excludes money set aside for your flight home.
• Insurance: full medical insurance for your entire stay is required, arranged before your visa is granted.
• Medical exam: not automatic. Immigration New Zealand may request a chest X-ray, a medical exam, or both, based on your health questionnaire. Evidence must be less than 3 months old.
• Fee: NZD $770.

Documents and taxes

Applications go in online, in English. If your police or medical certificate isn’t in English, you’ll need a certified English translation. Once you’re working in New Zealand, you’ll also need to register for an IRD number — New Zealand’s version of a tax ID — since employers use it to pay you correctly and deduct tax.
